Pattaya banks on draw card
THE NATION Published on June 17, 2009

Five tourism operators have launched the "Pattaya Hi5 Attraction Card" to draw tourists back to the resort city, which was not only hit by the political turmoil in April, but is also being adversely affected by Type-A(H1N1) cases.

The attractions on offer are the Thai Alangkarn Theatre, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Sri Racha Tiger Zoo, Tiffany's and the Tuxedo Magic shows.

The pre-paid card also entitles holders to an additional 70 per cent discount at other places, and can be bought at KTC Touch or thaiticketmajor.com for Bt999 until the end of November. The card, which is actually valued at Bt2,880, is valid until the end of December next year.

"The operators expect to sell 10,000 cards," said Suttikorn Jearpaitoon, managing director of Thai Alangkarn Theatre.

He said tourism business in Pattaya had initially suffered from the collapse of the Asean summit, which was meant to be held in April, and is now being further affected by the global economic slowdown and the swine-flu virus.

"If the situation does not get better, the tourism sector in Pattaya will get worse," he added.

The average hotel occupancy rate in Pattaya has dropped sharply because tourists from key markets, such as China, Taiwan and the West, are avoiding the city. However, tourists from Vietnam and India are still visiting.

According to Suttikorn, the number of visitors to the Thai Alangkarn Theatre has dropped from 20,000 to 25,000 per month to just 7,000 this month, and is expected to drop further to 6,000 next month.

This is why operators are revising their business plans by focusing on the local market.

"We hope the card will attract Thais, especially those living in Bangkok," he said.

The Jearpaitoon family, which owns the Twin Towers Hotel in Bangkok, has also decided to postpone its plans to build a hotel, convention and plaza worth Bt500 million on a land next to the theatre. The hotel would have had 300 to 400 rooms.
