Tijdens deze Pantropical party is er speciaal aandacht voor de extravagante Thaise popcultuur van de jaren '60 en '70. Dit is de allereerste special in Rotterdam voor deze muziek, gespeeld en gedraaid door musici en een dj uit Thailand.
DJ Maft Sai wil subgenres als Molam, Thai funk en Luk Thung * in de internationale kijker krijgen. Dat doet hij door het uitbrengen van vergeten parels op z'n eigen Zudrangma label, middels zijn beruchte 'Paradise Bangkok' en 'Isan Dancehall' parties en zijn bijdrages aan compilaties voor o.a. Finders Keepers. Daarnaast is hij de promoter van de Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, die vintage Molam spelen met een dansbare 21e eeuw vibe. Een must voor fans van toonaangevende labels als Soundway, Finders Keepers en natuurlijk Sublime Frequencies!
* Molam is veelzijdige folk afkomstig uit Laos en het voornamelijk plattelandse Noordoosten van Thailand (bekend als Isan). Luk Thung lijkt hiervan een afsplitsing te zijn.

With their popular party series 'Paradise Bangkok' and compilations for the fine labels Finders Keepers and Soundway, DJs Maft Sai & Chris Menist brought back the rich culture of Thai pop music of the 1960s and 70s to the public's attention. The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band is their attempt to stage this extravagant music again: Vintage Molam music played with a 21st century vibe, an infectious and highly danceable mixture. With Kammao Perdtanon who has been dubbed as the "Jimi Hendrix of the Phin" (that's a Thai lute) and Sawai Kaewsombat on Khaen (a sort of an East Asian harmonica) the group features two veteran wizards of Molam, a style originally hailing from the country's poor Isan region. Being backed by a young rhythm section this amazing group guarantees a night to remember!

The man behind the Zudrangma record label and the record store, specializing in Thai Funk, Luk Thung and Molam music. Maft Sai's pioneering work can be heard on his popular Zudrangma CD and vinyl compilation releases as well at his live "Paradise Bangkok" and "Isan Dancehall" showcases - spinning an eclectic mixture of Roots Luk Thung / Molam to Reggae, West African, Ethiopian, Far Eastern Psyche and underground sounds from around the world. He has also taken these showcases further afield, to Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodian, Japan, France, Switzerland, Austria, UK, Germany and the US.
■ AFROBOT (nl)
Afrobot is a crazed collector of exotic dance music who doesn't just play afro. Just back from a crate digging trip to Belgrade with a fresh batch of funky Yugo pop and psychedelica trophies, Afrobot is an avid selector of all kinds of tropical craziness from around the world. At Pantropical he'll be concentrating on 70's and 80's Bollywood stuff he recently unearthed in India.
