Ayutthaya chosen as bid city for World Expo 2020

The Cabinet yesterday picked Ayutthaya as the country's official bid city to host World Expo 2020.

Akapol Sorasuchart, presi?dent of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said the Kingdom was the first country to approve a city officially in the race to host the mega-event.

Ayutthaya came out ahead of the other two shortlisted provinces, Chon Buri and Chiang Mai, as it is close to Bangkok and has high potential for development as a new tourism landmark after the expo. The short distance from Bangkok means it would be easy for travellers to make one-day trips to the event.

Moreover, if it won the race to host the event, the province would also enhance the capi?tal's future expansion, including the plan to build an extended mass-transit rail system, the Red Line, to Rangsit, Akapol said.

According to the study of the three shortlisted candidates, Chon Buri would already have grown further in both the tourism and industrial sectors, while Chiang Mai faced some limitations.

The TCEB chief said Ayutthaya provincial authori?ties had proposed an area of 1,500 rai (240 hectares) in Bang Sai district to host the event. Most of the site belongs to the government and is currently partially used as the Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre found?ed by Her Majesty the Queen.

The government would need to purchase more land from pri?vate interests and expropriate many households. Expropriation costs are expect?ed to total Bt1.8 billion, he added.

Akapol said Thailand and all other candidate nations would proceed with host-city bidding to the Bureau International des Expositions within six months. The official host country will then be selected in 2014.

At this stage, the serious con?tenders to Thailand include Brazil, Turkey, Russia and Egypt, he added.

The plan is for Ayutthaya to host the World Expo from January to June 2020 under the theme "Balanced Life ... Sustainable Living". Hosting the event is expected to draw 27 million visitors from within the Kingdom and overseas.

Thailand's holding of the expo is estimated to require an investment of Bt31 billion. The event is expected to generate revenue of nearly Bt200 billion, and to boost gross domestic product by 1.3 per cent in 2020.

The Cabinet yesterday also approved a budget of Bt100 million for further communi?cations and first-tier packages related to the pre-bidding process.

Meanwhile, the TCEB yes?terday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Advertising Association of Thailand to continue commu?nication and public relations work both locally and overseas.

The move is part of the pre-bidding procedure as well as knowledge-building about the World Expo and meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) business in the country.

Er moeten zakken worden gevuld. Dat is wel duidelijk, en nu is die regio aan de beurt. Maar wat daarna ?

Er is nu nauwelijks hotelcapaciteit aldaar. Waarom ? Omdat men die hoop stenen die daar ligt niet komt bekijken; of een uurtje en men dan weer verder gaat. Een wereldding betekent tig hotels bouwen en die staan daarna leeg. Want Ayutthaya is niks, echt helemaal niks.

Er is teveel armoede in dit land om een prestige project van deze omvang te bouwen. Maar ik zal wel te rationeel denken.

Nah Prajak, ik denk dat er meer hotels zijn als jij denk waaronder sommigen van een zeer goede kwaliteit. Het sterft er ook van de guesthouses... en zelfs een paar convention centers..
Veel westerse jongere toeristen hier, de volgende geitenwollensokken generatie. die graag cultuur komen snuiven en daarnaast giert het van de Aziatische toersten...
Anderhalve rus en dat is meer dan voldoende... soms loont het dus dat het geen toeristisch centrum is. Half uurtje (Rangsit) tot een uur (Bang Na de andere kant) van Bangkok met al zijn
hotels en dergelijke...
Of ik er met genoegen naar uit kijk, niet echt...

Verder is er gelukkig weinig te doen, een beperkt nachtleven en een beperkt aanbod goed restaurants....dus een goede locatie voor mijn zeer welverdiende rust..

In heel Ayutthaya en daaromheen hangen banners en vlaggen met daarop de mededeling van de inzending dus compleet uit de elleboog komt het bericht niet...

Chiang Mai is zeer bedroefd. Die dacht dat zij de beste keus was voor die wereltentoonstelling. Overal zag je dan ook de billboards staan. Vooral bij het vliegveld waren die billboards enorm.

Nu gaat Ayutthaya met de eer strijken. En ik had nog zo gehoopt dat het Nederlandse paviljoen, naast mijn huis gebouwd ging worden.

Maar of Ayutthya die wereldtentoonstellling daadwerkelijk ook krijgt, dan valt te bezien.

Hoeveel landen strijden om de eer ?

Een wereldtentoonstelling brengt veel mensen; tienduizenden, honderduizenden, ik zou haast zeggen : tientallen. Kan dat nu al in A ? Nee, men moet gaan bouwen. En dat staat straks leeg.....

Maar we zien wel wie wint.

Ach, toen Thailand nog booming was voor de dreun van 97/98 werd er hier gebouwd bij het leven. Grote hotels met veel sterren en appartementen, het kon niet op.

Nou, de staketsels staan nu weg te rotten en een van de grootste hotels is gesloten......

Ik vermoed dat de meeste gasten voor de expo 1 dag trippers zullen zijn, heb overigens geen idee of er een centraal gebouw beschikbaar is, naar mijn mening niet...nog neit gezien althans

Ayutthaya kent een vrij uitgestrekt achterland en verspreid veel vnl. Japanse industrie, als men de zgn. studentenflats bouwt voor eventueel logies dan zal er gretig aftrek zijn nadien omdat velen moeten forensen naar deze industrieparken en van vele verschillend locaties.
Sponsoring, van de bedirjven die nu het transport moeten betalen, kan daarbij een element zijn

Het zal allemaal aan de periferie moeten gaan plaatsvinden omdat in Ayutthaya zelf kwa infrastructuur de mogelijkheden beperkt zijn. De belangrijkste vekeersader staat in de spitsuren en weekenden nu al vol...

Maar zoals je zegt, het is nog geen gedane zaak...
